Diamond mining group Petra Diamonds Limited has recovered a spectacular 507.55 carat (just over 100 grams) white diamond at the Cullinan mine in South Africa on 24 September, the company has just revealed.
The gemstone is being analysed by experts and initial examinations indicate that is most likely a Type II diamond and is of exceptional colour and clarity.
Three other special white stones of similar colour and clarity in the same production run were also recovered: another large stone of 168.00 carats and two other stones of 58.50 and 53.30 carats.
Cullinan has a history as the source of the world's largest gem diamond ever recovered, the 'Cullinan', at 3,106 carats rough, the Golden Jubilee at 755 carats rough and the Centenary at 599 carats rough, besides other famous gems such as the Taylor-Burton at 69 carats polished.
