NEW DELHI: The Royal Mint has announced that it is releasing a new gold coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mini.
With a face value of £1, each coin features a side-view of the classic Mini on the reverse, while the obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of the Queen.
The Mini design has been created specifically for the 50th anniversary by David Cornell and the coins have been struck for the Channel Island of Alderney.
Dave Knight, Royal Mint director of commemorative coins, told mediapersons, “The Mini’s design has truly stood the test of time, proving itself to be as great a British icon as Concorde, red telephone boxes and double-decker buses”.
Each of the 5,000 limited-edition gold coins is struck to proof quality in .999 fine gold and features an inscription reading “50th Anniversary of the first Mini”.
The coins come in a walnut-veneer presentation case with a certificate of authenticity for £74.95.
