Gold coins were among the items sold at the annual Cabin Fever Auction, which has taken place in the US town of Litchfield, Connecticut.

The event, which is organised by auction firm Tim's, saw a Panama Pacific commemorative gold coin dating from 1915 go under the hammer, eventually selling for $1,667 (£1,093), Antiques and the Arts reports.

A $20 gold piece from 1904 was purchased for $1,495 and a similar $10 item fetched $747 at what was described by auctioneer Tim Chapulis as "a hell of a sale".

"We had bidders calling from all over the country," he told the news source, adding that buyers from Florida, California and South Carolina were among those seeking to purchase items.

Last month, New York City hosted a display of pre-Colombian gold artefacts that have been auctioned in an online sale organised by iGavel.

Included in the exhibition was a brooch featuring a zoomorphic figure made from the precious metal and an avian-form pectoral ornament of Costa Rican origin.
