Indonesia seeks to import 5 lakh tons of rice from India

NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): Indonesia seeks India for 5,00,000 tons of non- basmati rice at lower prices as the grains from Thailand and Vietnam has turned out to be costly.

The recent floods in Thailand and Vietnam has affected the rice production as result the export price of the commodity from both the countries has gone up, forcing Indonesia to look for other options to ensure sufficient supply in the country.

Presently, India has been offering rice at over $ 470 a ton, which is much lower than the price in Thailand and Vietnam.

"Indonesia, that especially buys rice from Vietnam and Thailand, has requested 5,00,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice from India," the Economic Times quoting a senior official said.

The officials from Indonesia had met the Food Minister of India, Mr K.V. Thomas and discussed the issues.

According to the officials, the India government would be providing rice from the government godwons at lower prices, which could be around Rs 20.45 per kg.

India is the second largest rice grower in the world and the country is expected to harvest 102 million tons of rice in 2011-12 crop year.
