Assam bird flu hits poultry sector again

As if the terror attacks and today’s blast on a train in Assam wee not enough, India has got another trouble in the form of bird flu.

After fighting the deadly virus successfully several times in the past, avian influenza has reared its head again in Kamrup district of Assam.

Following this, India has informed the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about the outbreak of the disease.

Samples from Rajabazar village in Assam tested positive for H5 strain of Avian Influenza at the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal on November 27.

About 20 Rapid Action Teams were consequently deployed in the state to undertake the culling operations. Teams of Health Ministry officials have also been rushed from New Delhi.

India’s poultry sector is once again under the threat of bird flu following this incident.

Last year also India had suffered due the attack of the virus. Poultry industry suffered hugely due to bird flu.

Assam state government has so far stamped about 40,000 poultry and the culling operation is expected to be completed soon.
