China, ArcelorMittal toppers in steel in 2008

BRUSSELS: China is on top as the world’s largest producer of Steel producing 500.5 million metric tonnes (mmt) while Arcelor Mittal is on top as the largest steel producing company, according to the 2009 editon of World Steel in Figures published by the World Steel Association.

World Steel in Figures provides essential facts and statistics about the global steel industry. The book contains comprehensive information on crude steel production, apparent steel use, trade, scrap, iron, and pig iron.

In 2008 the five major Steel producing countries were: China 500.5 mmt, Japan 118.7 mmt, United States 91.4 mmt, Russia 68.5 mmt and India 55.2 mmt.

Total world production was 1,326.5 mmt in 2008, down from 1,351.3 mmt in 2007.
