Govt raises minimum onion export price
Commodity Online NEW DELHI: In view to arrest price rise and ensure the availability of the commodity in the domestic markets, the government has increased the minimum export price of onion on Wednesday.
NAFED senior official said that it has increased the MSP of onion by $50 a tonne to an average of $380-385 for January in order to boost domestic supply.
NAFED is the nodal agency for onion export, which decides the MEP every month in consultation with 12 other agencies. Demand for onions has increased in the southern part of the country where kharif crop arrivals are over, he explained.
Short supply in this region led to rise in the prices of onion from other producing region especially from Nashik. Normally, arrivals of kharif crops in the southern region start in August and end by November.
“At present, the supply of fresh crops are continuing mainly in Maharashtra. So we thought of curtailing the exports a bit to boost supply and, thereby, check prices until late kharif crops start flooding the market by January 15,” the official said.
