India’s summer sown oil seed output may fall

MUMBAI (Commodity Online): India’s summer sown oil seed production is expected to decline by 9% to 13.65 million to metric tonnes as compared to 8.9 million tonnes a year ago, due to lower acreage and the weak monsoon rains.

According to the Central Organization for Oil Industry & Trade, total area under summer-sown oilseeds fell to 17.5 million hectares, from 18.4 million hectares last year.

The trade body also said total vegetable oil imports in the marketing year ended October 31 is estimated at 8.67 million tons, sharply up from 6.35 million tonnes last year. Total edible oil imports in 2008-09 are likely to be at 8.2 million tons, while nonedible oil imports are likely at 450,000 tonnes, it said.
