NEW DELHI: India Post, the postal services arm of the government of India, has launched an innovative scheme to distribute free gold coins to customers. India Post will give gold coins to all those who purchase its newly launched internationally certified coins.
From January 12 onwards, India Post will offer 0.5 gram gold coins free to its customers with every purchase of 10 gram, said a statement from the Department of Post on Saturday.
”We are launching this ambitious scheme that coincides with the auspicious occasions of Makar Sankranti and Lohri in north India, Pongal and Tamil New Year in south India, Uttarayan in east India which are celebrated on January 14, said John Samuel, India Post general manager for business development.
In October last year, India Post in association with World Gold Council and Reliance Money had launched the scheme to sell gold coins through post offices. The high quality 24-carat gold coins with certification from Valcambi of Switzerland come in attractive packs of 0.5, one, five and eight grams.
The gold coins scheme that is still continuing has been a huge success and more states and post offices are being added to the gold coins selling programme.
Ever since the scheme began, India Post says over two kilo grams of gold coins has been sold every day through post offices. “We expect the sale of gold coins to up to 5 kilo every day by this month end,” said Samuel.
He said the new scheme to provide free gold coins is an attempt further boost the existing gold selling scheme that has been a sterling success. “People in India see gold as a safe investment option. They buy gold coins from post offices these days for gift and investment purposes as the prices of gold coins begins from the attractive price of Rs 700 onwards,” Samuel said.
Samuel said that the offer of free gold coins will further attract new customers in rural and urban areas across India.
