India spices export rises 27% in Oct, 2009

KOCHI (Commodity Online): India's spices exports have risen 27% in quantity terms and 9% in value terms in October 2009 on an annualised basis, according to Spices Board.

Export of spices from India has been 41,585 MT valued Rs.505.74 crores as against 32,650 MT valued Rs.463.21 crores in October 2008. The increase over last year same month is 27% in quantity and 9% in value (14% in dollar terms). Compared to September 2009 also the increase during October is substantial at 10% in volume 16% in value (20% in dollar terms).

During the month of October 2009, most of the spices have shown positive trend as compared to October 2008. The spices, which have shown substantial increase in export during the month are Cardamom (Small), Chilli, Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic, Nutmeg& Mace, Curry Powder and Spice oils and oleoresins.

During the month, we have exported 200 MT of cardamom (small) valued Rs.14.60 crores against 50 MT valued Rs.2.08 crores during October 2008. Export of Chilli has also registered substantial increase during the month. The export in October 2009 has been 18,500 MT valued Rs.125.34 crores as against 10,750 MT valued Rs.68.13 crores during October 2008, registering an increase of 70% in volume and 84% in rupee value.

The export of Spice Oils & Oleoresins during the month has increased to 600 MT valued Rs.62.88 crores from 500 MT valued Rs.59.10 crores in October 2008. The increase is 20% in volume and 6% in value.

The export performance of spices like Pepper, Cardamom (Large), Fennel, Vanilla and Mint products was, however, not up to the expected level, Spices Board said.
