Commodity Online NEW DELHI: Indian chilli has become a hot commodity now with floods in Pakistan damaging the chilli crop in that country and Indian chilli cashing in on that in the global market.
Indian chilli’s demand soared by 21 per cent in the global market and that helped India’s spices export go up.
In terms of volume, the overall chilli exports for June and July went up by 20.91 per cent at 50,000 tonnes, compared to 41,350 tonnes last year.
During April-May, chilli exports have surged especially to Pakistan and Sri Lanka due to crop failure in China and Pakistan following bad weather conditions.
The exports to Pakistan, also a chilli growing nation, have jumped more than 23 times during April-May at 16,170 tons compared to a mere 700 tons in the corresponding period last year.
The exports to Sri Lanka stood at 7000 tonnes, compared to 5000 tonnes during the same period last year.
According to traders in Guntur, the exports would continue at a similar pace to countries like Sri Lanka.
However, there would be hardly any further exports to Pakistan as the country has imported what was required for the year.
