Russian uranium fuel arrives for KNPP project

Commodity Online
NEW DELHI: Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd on Monday said, the first consignment of uranium fuel from Russia for the Kudankulam Project has reached in Mumbai.

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd said in a statement said, “This consignment, which arrived in Mumbai Sunday, comes under a sovereign guarantee of the Russian Federation.

The KNPP, comprising two units of 100 MW each, is at an advanced stage of completion in technical collaboration with the Russian Federation. The two units belong to the advanced design of VVER family, a pressurised water reactor constituting majority of power reactors in the world.

These reactors use light enriched uranium (LEU) as fuel. LEU has been in use in VVER 100 MW units in several countries around the world since the 1980s and has given excellent performance.

Construction of the KNPP is currently on at Radhapuram in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu and is being set up through a bilateral agreement between India and the former USSR.

With round-the-clock construction activities, a physical progress of around 86 percent has already been achieved. All major components have already been erected at the site.

Currently, the pre-commissioning activities have commenced at the site. Indian scientists and engineers have also been trained and qualified for commissioning, operation and maintenance activities at KNPP.
