Shipping- Logistics Digest: China-US port trade up

Qualcomm customer sto get covert freight freight tracking
Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading provider of integrated wireless systems and services to transportation, logistics and service fleet companies, and FreightWatch, the leading global logistics security solutions provider, today announced that the two companies will offer a covert freight tracking solution to Qualcomm customers. The service, which is available to carriers of high value and sensitive loads, will deliver an electronic freight security solution that uses covert tracking technologies to maintain a constant view of in-transit cargo from its point of origin to its destination. In addition to the asset management capabilities of Qualcomm’s mobile information systems, carriers will also be provided with the ability to track individual pallets or entire trailer loads covertly, assuring freight transportation companies increased visibility into the both location and status of their cargo.

FreightWatch offers the Geo F1 and Geo F2 location position devices, along with the proprietary FSNtracks online service, to deliver an enterprise-class, embedded cargo tracking application for the trucking industry. The Geo F1 and Geo F2 units are based on the inGeo Platform, which is developed and powered by Qualcomm’s CDMA Technologies division. The devices, which leverage Qualcomm’s gpsOne® position-location technology, are small enough to be hidden in hard to find locations, such as inside a freight pallet or beneath the undercarriage of a trailer.

The FreightWatch Geo F1 and Geo F2 cargo trackers help combat theft by facilitating supply chain visibility, which can significantly reduce the risk of product theft, product loss and lost time-to-market, resulting in improved profitability and reduced investigative, recovery and insurance costs. Together with FreightWatch theft prevention and monitoring services, carriers will be provided with a unified view of covert freight tracking and security information, plus pro-active theft prevention and risk management services, supplying an additional layer of logistics security to customers of Qualcomm’s transportation services business.

“We are extremely pleased to be collaborating with FreightWatch to provide our customers’ with a solution to proactively address the estimated $25 billion worldwide cargo theft issue,” said Norm Ellis, vice president of sales, services and marketing for Qualcomm Enterprise Services. “Our customers can now benefit from FreightWatch’s proven theft prevention and recovery services and outstanding freight recovery record.”

“Joining forces with Qualcomm allows us to better meet the needs of key stakeholders across the supply chain,” said Barry Conlon, CEO of FreightWatch. “In addition to shippers, we can now offer our freight security solution to carriers of high-value loads, further reducing the risks and costs associated with cargo loss.”

UPS announces enhancements to tech tools
UPS (NYSE: UPS) has announced enhancements to several technology tools that simplify the use of multiple transportation modes and give importers more control over shipments.

"Businesses of all sizes count on UPS to bridge the distance between their suppliers and their customers" said Dan Brutto, president of UPS International. "Technology is the key to helping shippers, particularly exporters and importers, streamline their global supply chains"

The technology enhancements, announced today at the American Association of Exporters and Importers 89th Annual Conference & Expo, include:

- Importers will have more control and fewer delays of their shipments with UPS Import Control, a new functionality that enables an importer to process an import shipment through their UPS shipping system, specifically CampusShip or Internet Shipping on ups.com.

- CampusShip will join UPS shipping systems, WorldShip, and Internet Shipping, in processing air freight shipments in addition to less-than-truckload (LTL) freight shipments, providing the same easy-to-use interface for both small package and LTL freight shippers.

- Quantum View Manage, a web-based tool, will provide enhanced support for shipper visibility into air, ocean and LTL freight shipments.

- ups.com will provide self-enrollment in UPS Paperless Invoice, which allows small package shipments to clear customs in 92 countries using electronic data instead of error-prone paper forms known as commercial invoices.

UPS Import Control
UPS Import Control puts control over inbound logistics and costs in the hands of the importer rather than the exporter. Available in July, UPS Import Control will allow importers to use CampusShip or Internet Shipping to generate shipping labels and commercial invoices for a small package import shipment and forward those materials to the international shipper (exporter). The importer can even dispatch a UPS driver to provide the materials and collect the shipment.

Importers can elect to have the commercial invoice removed prior to delivery to a third party, insuring that an end-customer doesn’t receive cost of goods information. In addition, importers don’t have to supply the exporter with UPS account information and the exporter can even use other shippers.

Through a web-based tool, either Quantum View Manage or Tracking on ups.com, importers will have complete shipment visibility from pickup to final delivery, including any exception information, which helps plan work schedules, provide enhanced customer service, and balance inventory levels.

Shipping and Visibility System Enhancements
For freight shippers, Quantum View Manage is being enhanced in July to provide additional shipment details, document images (e.g., Commercial Invoice, Packing List and Reweigh Certificate) and advanced freight alerts and notifications of milestone events. At the same time, UPS is enhancing its shipping system, CampusShip, to support air freight shipments as well. WorldShip and Internet Shipping already provide air and LTL freight support. This means that UPS customers can now easily process and track small package and freight shipments with the same systems, simplifying the use of multiple transportation modes in the customer’s supply chain.

UPS Paperless Invoice
Beginning in July, any customer wanting to take advantage of the benefits of UPS Paperless Invoice for their international shipments can self-enroll on ups.com. A first-to-market solution available since 2008, UPS Paperless Invoice has allowed thousands of customers to reduce the likelihood of customs holds by up to 41 percent and enhance their company’s sustainability efforts by eliminating the need for paper commercial invoices.
