Spices export rises 20% in April-May 2008

KOCHI:The cumulative spices export during the period of Apr-May 2008 is estimated as 98,570 tonnes valued Rs.885.04 crores (214.88 million US $) as against 82,210 tonnes valued Rs.690.74 crores (166.67 million US $) in the corresponding period of last year, according to the Spices Board

Compared to last year, the export has shown an increase of 20% in terms of quantity and an increase of 28% in rupee value (In dollar terms, the increase is 29%). Spice oils and oleoresins including mint products contributed 35% of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 27% followed by pepper 11%, cumin 7%and turmeric 4%.

During Apr-May 2008, the export of pepper, chilli, coriander, cumin, celery, other miscellaneous seeds, vanilla, curry powder, spice oils & oleoresins and mint products are higher in terms of both quantity and value as compared to the same period of last year, Spices Board said in a press release.

However, export of spices like Cardamom (Large), Ginger and Fennel have shown decline both in terms of quantity and value as compared to last year. In the case of Cardamom (Small), Turmeric, Garlic and other miscellaneous spices, the export earnings have increased as compared to last year. However, the export quantity has declined.

During May 2008, a total quantity of 51,500 tonnes of spices valued Rs.470.03 crores (111.55 million US $) has been exported as against 38,946 tonnes valued Rs.349.48 crores (85.69 million US $) in May 2007. The major items exported during May 2008 are Chilli, Mint products, Spice Oils & Oleoresins, Pepper, Cumin and Coriander.

During April-May 2008, India has exported 5,750 tonnes of pepper valued Rs.94.28 crores as against 4,920 tonnes valued Rs.68.77 crores of last year.

During the period, we have exported 50,000 tonnes of chilli valued Rs.240.88 crores as against 41,350 tonnes valued Rs.232.21 crores of last year, registering an increase of 21% in quantity and 4% in value terms. The export of coriander seed during Apr-May 2008 has been 6,750 tonnes valued Rs.41.39 crores as against 4,570 tonnes valued Rs.16.12 crores of last year.

The export of Cumin seed during April-May 2008 has increased considerably and the export has been 6,500 tonnes valued Rs.63.83 crores as against 2,180 tonnes valued Rs.22.04 crores. The export of Cumin has shown an increase of 198% in quantity and 190% in value terms as compared to last year.

During April-May 2008, India has exported 2,375 tonnes of curry powder valued Rs.23.77 crores as against 1,690 tonnes valued Rs.15.06 crores of last year. During Apr-May, the export of spice oils and oleoresins has been 1,500 tonnes valued Rs.139.61 crores as against 1,065 tonnes valued Rs.86.93 crores of last year.

Against the export target of 425,000 tonnes valued Rs.4,350.00 croes (US$ 1025.00) for the year, the achievement of 98,570 tonnes valued Rs.885.04 crores (US$ 214.88 million) up to May 2008 is 23% in quantity and 21% in dollar terms of value.
