Commodity Online
NASHIK : Onions are strong not only in their vigour but even politically as has been proved in India from time to time. It has the same power to bring tears to your eyes as it has to bring down a government.

Untimely rains in onion growing areas only added insult to the injury to onion supply as it was hit by a fungal infection. The prices are now hovering around Rs 30 per kg from Rs 10 a month back.

At many places onions became the single largest commodity on demand which could be guauged from the auction at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Lasalgaon in Nashik, a 61 year old record. Lasalgaon APMC is the country’s largest onion market.

A record 46,500 quintals of onions were auctioned in a single day. These onions were brought for the auction in 1,602 vehicles, sold at a minimum price of Rs 983 a quintal and a maximum price of Rs 1,499 a quintal.
