Sugar cane farmers on strike for better pay
Published on: October 28, 2009 at 17:50
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): Farmers in Utter Pradesh, India’s second largest sugar cane producing state, are on strike for better pay for their produce as erratic monsoon hit the production.

Industrial official said, the ongoing strike by the farmers caused to delay in cane crushing and it is expected to start crushing by mid November. Normally, cane crushing starts by the first week of October.

The delay could mean a fall in the state's sugar output, as farmers may be tempted to sell some of the produce to jaggery and molasses producers.
