HANOI: Vietnamese rice exporters are asking the government to raise this year’s target for rice exports to 5.2 million tons from the 5 million tons approved earlier this year, an industry official said.

So far this year, harvesting of the winter- spring paddy rice crop in the Mekong Delta region has resulted in about 5 million tons of exportable rice, said the official with the state-run Vietnam Food Association.

“VFA is seeking government approval to increase the export target, because if we add the volume left from last year, we are quite capable of exporting more than 5.2 million tons,” said the official, who declined to be named.
