Bad weather hits Himachal mango production
Commodity Online NURPUR: Mango production in the sub division of Nirpur in Himachal Pradesh has been hit by bad weather and almost all the yield were damaged.
According to officials of the district horticulture department, the production of mango has gone down by half in Nurpur sub-division and neighbouring areas of Kangra district, leaving farmers in distress.
The farmers are now demanding the state government compensation on the line of that had given to the state’s apple growers.
The data released by the horticulture department, the production of mango has gone down to 8000 metric tonne in 2007-08, while yield was 15260 metric tonne in 2006-07.
The department estimates the loss for mango growers to the tune of Rs 5.90 crore for the current year.
Meanwhile, Horticulture Development Officer D P Singh said farmers should be provided with better irrigation facilities and smokescreen should be formed in the orchards to minimise such damage in future.
