Bouquets & brickbats for Indian mango
Commodity Online RAJKOT/NEW DELHI: It is bouquets and brickbats for Indian mangoes. While the US is welcoming mangoes from India like Kesar and Alphonso, the Russian government has banned import of mangoes from India.
In fact, the king of fruits have won the hearts of several nations like the US, Japan, Europe and West Asia. But, the Russian authorities have banned import of agriculture commodities from India after detecting the kharpa beetle pest in a consignment of sesame seeds that landed in Russia a couple of months ago.
Following this, mango growers in the country have lost a lot of business.
However, the situation has been mitigated by the strong demand in the US and other countries.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (India) (APEDA) has asked the Russian authorities to reconsider the decision.
Buyers from Russia declined to purchase mangoes citing the ban and all the orders were cancelled.
According to APEDA data , fresh mango exports to Russia stood at 4.94 tonnes worth Rs 8.12 lakh in 2006-07.
Indian food products, most of which are widely consumed here, are also getting rejected in the US.
According to the monthly refusal list issued by the Operational and Administrative System for Import Support (OASIS) in January, Indian exports were subject to third highest number of refusal actions, with 115 cases.
Between April 9-10 about 1,080 boxes of Alphonso and Kesar mangoes weighing 3800 kg has been dispatched to Chicago. Also 1,275 boxes of same mangoes weighing 4,460 kg has been sent to New York and 420 boxes of mangoes weighing 1,470 kg destined for Atlanta.
The US assured to grant market access to India mangoes when president, George Bush, visited India in 2006. It was agreed that Indian mangoes should be irradiated to meet the sanitary and phytosanitary norms of that country. Accordingly the irradiation treatment facility of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) was proposed and APEDA was appointed as the coordinator for integrating the entire chain linking.
India is the largest producer of mangoes in the world (around 14 million tonnes) with an over 50% share of world production. However, a large quantity of the mango produced is consumed in the areas of production.
Major commercial varieties of mangoes like Dushehari, Alphonso, Kesar, Banganpalli, Langra, Chausa, Mallika, Swarnrekha and Totapuri are available for exports.
APEDA is a link for arranging promotion of both fresh and processed mango products in international market.
APEDA helps Indian exporters in comprehensively addressing issues relating to the entire supply chain.
