BRAZILIA (Commodity Online): Silk industries in Sounth American Countires, especially Brazil, to see production growth by 20% by 2012 from 8% in 2011, according to Michael Cordonnier, an expert in the country's agriculture.
Brazil has already placed itself as the top exporter of coffee and sugar, and a major exporter of corn and soybeans.Now its trying to gain the similar success in silk production too.
The expansion process will strenghten its second position after China.
The high quality of the silk has spurred the demand for the brazilian silk mainly in the asian markets.
According to Dr Cordonnier, Soybean and Corn Advisor, one of the major advantage of siilk production is that it generate monthly income while income from cattles and sugarcane on an annual basis, reported agrimoney.com
In Brazil, less than 5,000 farmers are involved in mulberry tree farmering and around 13,000 hactares are under farming.
