CCEA approves coir modernisation scheme

NEW DELHI:The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given approval for the technology upgradation and modernization schemes for the coir sector in the country.
It includes the first phase of a central sector scheme on Rejuvenation, Modernization & Technology Upgradation of the Coir Industry with an overall cost of Rs.243 crore.
A grant of Rs.99 crore out of a total project cost will be given in the first phase.The Scheme envisages to cover 4000 spinning units and 3200 tiny / household units during the XI Plan.
Under the scheme, one existing obsolete ratt/unit would be replaced by four mechanized ratts and each new mechanized ratt will be handled by two against three workers/spinners, presently. The entire intervention in the spinning sector is targeted to be women oriented.
The standard project cost of each spinning and Tiny/Household weaving unit will be Rs.2 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh respectively. The government subsidy will be 40% of the project cost in each case. 5% of the project cost will be contributed by the beneficiary and the rest 55% will be met through the term loan from the Banks/FI.
The Scheme would help in:
(i) Wages of spinner will be increased from Rs.6000 per annum to Rs.29896 per annum
(ii) Income of weavers in Tiny/ Household sector will be increased from Rs.21065 p.a. to Rs.43230 p.a.
(iii) Productivity per ratt is estimated to increase from 5 to 10 kg per day and productivity per loom to increase from 5 to 10 mats per day.
(iv)Number of work days to gradually increase from 100 to 300 in spinning sector and from 100 to 150 days in Tiny / Household sector.
(v) Employment to increase from 24000 to 60800
