Coal mines to boost production

NEW DLEHI: Production in India’s underground coal mines would increase to some 74 million tonnes by 2011-12 from the present level of 57.76 million tonnes.
Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited would increase production from underground mines by opening new mines, Minister of State for Coal Dasari Narayana Rao told parliament today.
The coal production is also set to increase as these companies plan to apply mass production technology in the existing mines, the minister said.
At present, coal production from opencast mines is more than from underground mines. The coal production during 2006-07 was 373.09 million tonnes from opencast mines and 57.76 million tones from underground mines with a total production of 430.85 million tonnes.
The estimated coal resources of the country in January 2007 are 255.17 billion tonnes of which the proved coal reserves are 97.92 billion tonnes.
Next year’s product projection for underground mines is 62. 59 million tonnes, which is projected to further increase 67.75 in 2009-10. The projection for 2010-11 is 71.09 tonnes and by 2011-12 it will increase to 73.93 million tonnes, the minister said.
