Commodity Online KOCHI: India's incremental coir exports in value terms rose by 4.8 percent or Rs 2.26 crore in December 2008 when compared to same period in 2007.
The nation exported 12170 MT of coir earning Rs 49.37 cr, however, there was a dip of 2052 tonnes or 14.43 percent in volume terms compared to December 2007, V S Vijayaraghavan, Chairman, Coir Board said.
The Chairman said that the cumulative exports between April-December 2008 when compared to the same period of last year reveal that 1,36,420 MT fetched a value of Rs.460crore a growth of just 1.25 percent in quantity terms and 6.02% in value terms.

Coir mats improved its exports volume by 3% while in value terms it posted a 14% growth (6305MT which was valued @Rs.40.98 crore was exported).
Coir pith shrunk in volume and value when its consignments stood at 4441MT valued at Rs.3.55 crore. This was due to fall in demand in our exports to Europe where there was a steep fall.
Curled coir exports were impressive with 150MT fetching Rs.22.55 lakh in value registering 317% growth in volume and 480% in value. Malaysia and Republic of China were its major buyers. However, the high sprout in demand is due to the fact that there was lull in the export of this item during the last 3 months.
Coir Mattings was able to garner Rs.1.14crore in value towards despatch of 163MT in December 2008 against the same value it fetched against despatch of 177MT in December 2007.
Coir Rugs and carpets improved their performance marginally when it was able to despatch 6MT valued Rs.4.40 lakhs registering 8% growth over its compared month's figures.
Coir fibre continued to post a negative growth of 49% in volume (294MT) and 49% in value (Rs.32.32lakhs) over its performance of 2007 due to low emerging demand from China who was a major buyer of the item.
Coir geo textiles was another casuality when it registered negative growth in volume and value terms when the exports could touch only 220MT in volume and Rs.92.25 lakhs in value.
