Coir exports up in Q108 despite rupee appreciation

KOCHI: Coir exports from India have registered a growth of 7.83 percent in quantity and 1.99 percent increase in terms of value during the first quarter of 2008-09.

The export of coir & coir products during April to June 2008 as per the provisional figures amounted to 45038 tonnes valued at Rs.12963.90 lakhs.

The export has registered an increase of 3272 metric tonnes (7.83%) in terms of quantity and an inecrease of Rs.253.30 lakhs (1.99%) in terms of value over the actual export of 41766 metric tonnes valued at Rs.12710.60 lakhs during the corresponding period April to June 2007.

During April to June 2008 the export of the semi¬ finished item of Coir viz. Coir yarn has recorded a decrease of 17% in quantity and a decrease of 21% in terms of value, as against the previous year.

“In the first quarter of 2008-09, Coir export successfully continued to build a strong momentum. The performance gives us confidence, that we are on the right track. Even though the rupee appreciation prevails we could managed to sustain an attractive growth rate, and export of Coir shows a very promising development in the Coir Sector of the country,” A C Jose, Chairman, Coir Board said.

In respect of value added items of coir viz. coir mats, coir mattings and rugs & carpets, the trend of export was as detailed below:-

COIR PITH:
Export of this item has increased from 18575 tonnes to 24435 tonnes in quantity(32%) and in terms of value it increased from Rs.1461.93 lakhs to 1765.52 lakhs (21%) when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

RUBBERISED COIR:
Export of this item has increased from 184 tonnes to 307 tonnes in quantity (67%) and in terms of value it increased from Rs.147.42 lakhs to Rs.241.41 lakhs (64%) when compared to the same period of the previous year.

COIR ROPE:
Export of this item has increased from 2 tonnes to 33 tonnes in quantity (1550%) and in terms of value it increased from 1.24 lakhs to 10.16 lakhs (719%) when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

COIR MAT:
Export of this item has increased from 15137 to 15956 tonnes in quantity (5%) and in terms of value it increased from Rs.8969.39 lakhs to Rs.9564.42 (7%) when compared to the corre¬sponding period of the previous year.

COIR RUGS & CARPETS:
Export of this item has decreased from 73 tonnes to 6 tonnes in quantity (92%) and Rs.50.37 lakhs to Rs.3.63 lakhs (93%) in value when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

COIR YARN:
Export of this item has decreased from 2150 tonnes to 1780 tonnes in terms of quantity (17%) and in terms of value there was a decrease from Rs.657.14 lakhs to Rs.517.60 lakhs (21%) when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

COIR MATTING:
Export of this item has decreased from 934 tonnes to 592 tonnes in terms of quantity (37%) and there was a decrease from Rs.577.85 lakhs to Rs.404.51 lakhs in terms of value (30%) when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

COIR OTHER SORTS:
Export of this item has decreased from 16 tonnes to 7 tonnes in quantity (56%) and in terms of value it decreased from Rs.12.62 lakhs to Rs.4.13 lakhs (67%) in terms of value when compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

CURLED COIR:
Nil export is recorded during this period as against 345 MT in quantity for Rs.40.05 lakhs in terms of value when compared to the
MCX Silver 05 September 2012 contract was trading at Rs 56922 . What's your view on it?
