Committee on Futures trading to submit report
Commodity Online
NEW DELHI: Finally, the Abhijit Sen Committee that was set up to study a gamut of issues concerning commodity futures trading in India will submit its report to the government soon.
Officials said the Committee is scheduled to submit it report any day after the ongoing going monsoon session of Parliament concludes on Septemebr 14.
The government had set up the Committee to study the co-relation between futures trading and price rise in essential commodities. A section of political parties have argued that inflation rose to nearly 7 percent six months back thanks to futures trading several essential agri commodities.
The government had banned futures trading in tur, urad, wheat and rice early this year in an attempt to keep inflation under control.
Whether the Sen Committee would recommend lifting of the ban on futures trading in these commodities is not know. But officials said most members of the Committee have given their views that futures trading is essential for the robust growth of agriculture in the country.
If the government accepts the recommendations of the Sen Committee, it would set the ball rolling for the amendment of the Forward Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1952 in Parliament.
The amendment is expected to free the commodity futures trading, allow options, as well as broader participation in the market.
