Dr Mangala Rai elected President of NAAS

NEW DELHI: Dr. Mangala Rai, Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR, has been elected as President of the prestigious National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, India for a term of 3 years. Dr. Rai had taken over the charges on 1st January 2008.
The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) is a premier body of over 460 eminent agricultural scientists in India and abroad which includes 5 World Food Laureates. The Academy’s major objective is to promote ecologically sustainable agriculture, recognize and promote excellence in the field of agricultural sciences in India.
Dr. Mangala Rai is functioning as the Secretary, Govt. of India, Department of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE) and Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) since January 2003 and is providing able leadership to one of the largest National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of the World.
Dr. Rai is nominated on the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet and on the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. His current international responsibilities include the Membership on Board of Trustees of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI); Governing Board of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT); and Policy Advisory Council (PAC) of the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
