Duke Energy commissions 70MW windpower project
NEW YORK (Commodity Online): US-based Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK) commissions its 70 MW wind-power projects in Pennsylvania and Wyoming.
Duke Energy has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE: FE) for selling power from its North Allegheny Wind power Project. Duke Energy assumed ownership of the development project from Gamesa Energy USA of Philadelphia this year. The project is 95 miles from Pittsburg. North Allegheny is Duke Energy’s first commercial wind farm in the eastern United States.
Duke Energy, which provides electricity to customers in Warren and Butler counties, also recently brought its 42-megawatt Silver Sage Wind power Project in Cheyenne, Wyo., on line. Silver Sage is the company’s second wind farm in the area; the nearby 29-megawatt Happy Jack Wind power Project started generation a year ago.
Duke Energy will sell all of the electricity generated at Silver Sage to Cheyenne Light Fuel & Power, a subsidiary of Black Hills Corporation (NYSE:BKH), and Colorado-based Platte River Power Authority.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Duke also said Siemens Energy will join General Electric as a wind-turbine supplier for a 200 MW wind farm Duke Energy is planning near Casper, Wyoming.
Duke Energy includes the former Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co., Union Light, Heat and Power in Kentucky, and PSI Energy in Indiana. The company also operates Duke Power in the Carolinas.
Duke Energy is an energy company that provides its services through three business segments, including U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas, Commercial Power and International Energy.
During the year ended December 31, 2008, Crescent was a reportable business segment of Duke Energy. However, in 2008, the Company included the operations of Crescent Other business segment.
