MUMBAI (Commodity Online): Europe might soon see a new legislation that mandates that automobile tyre will have to have a label stating their fuel efficiency. A compromise agreement regarding this was reached between the European Commission, Council of the European Union and the European Parliament on October 1.
“This is another step in the right direction and we call upon the EU Parliament and the EU Council to formally adopt this agreement by the end of the year,” said Axel C. Heitmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of LANXESS AG.
When adopted, this legislation will help to reduce CO2 and noise emissions on Europe’s roads, by promoting green tyres with improved fuel-efficiency that do not compromise on safety. In addition, the labels will provide more transparency to consumers.

The deal between the European Commission, Council of the European Union and the European Parliament means that from 2012 onwards, tyres must have to provide details on their fuel efficiency, wet grip and rolling noise. The tires are to be categorized in a system of classes, with the best performance being labeled “Class A” and the poorest “Class G”. This system will offer consumers an important decision-making aid, when purchasing new tires.
Environmentally friendly tires produced with high-performance rubber from LANXESS have lower rolling resistance and therefore save fuel, the company claimed in a pres release.
The reduction in fuel consumption, in turn, cuts down the discharge of CO2 and lowers the impact on the environment. If all vehicles were equipped with such tyres, around six billion liters of fuel could be saved every year in Europe alone, leading to a reduction in CO2 emissions of about 15 million metric tons. The high-tech materials produced by LANXESS make it possible to extend the “Magic Triangle” of tire technology: to combine low rolling resistance with good wet grip – in other words a shorter braking distance – and long service life, the release said.
