NEW DELHI: In a move to help onion farmers, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) decided not to change the minimum export price of onion for the next month in view of continued slump in the domestic price of the commodity.

The MEP of onion will remain at February level, which is $165-390 a tonne.

The NAFED has decided not to change the MEP for March as the domestic prices remain at around Rs 250 per quintal in the major growing belts of Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon in Maharashtra, NAFED vice-chairman C B Holkar told mediapersons.

He said the onion export from the country has declined to 8.70 lakh tonnes so far in the current fiscal, compared to about 11 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period.

NAFED, along with 12 other agencies, fixes the onion MEP every month. The MEP for February was reduced by $20 a tonne to $165-390 a tonne for most of the destinations. However, for West Asia, the major importers, the MEP is $180-210 a tonne.

Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore are the other major markets for Indian onions.
