Fix onion prices, Maharashtra urges Centre

NASIK: Concerned over the fluctuating onion prices, Maharashtra government has urged the Centre to fix onion prices on the lines of wheat, jawar and corn.
At a press conference, state marketing minister Harshvardhan Patil said farmers have been suffering losses following declining prices of onions and government was thinking of providing financial assistance to them.
The Central government has granted funds of Rs 15 core to Maharashtra for setting up onions storage places and government has to spend the amount before March 31.
The markets of Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Lasalgaon was flooded with onions following heavy arrival of the rangada variety.
The markets opened on Monday after a two-day holiday and 54,000 quintal onions loaded on 1,803 tractors arrived at APMC and about 34,590 quintals were auctioned on prices ranging from Rs 161 per quintal to Rs 406 per quintal.
