Gas explosions in coal mines take 17 lives in China
BEIJING (Commodity Online): Around 17 coal miners were killed and nearly 11 others were trapped in the two separate gas explosions that occurred in China’s two coal mines within past 24 hours.
Twelve miners were killed late Sunday in the Donggou Colliery mines in Jiexiu city in northern Shanxi province, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
According to Colliery official, the accident took place after workers broke a wall between the shafts where gas was stored in high density. However, five executives of the company were arrested. Survived were taken to hospitals.
In a second incident, five miners were killed and six missing after a similar gas burst in another coal mine in China’s southwest Yunnan province.
The miners were working in a shaft of Malishu Coal Mine in Shuangbai County when the incident happened at about at about 0150 am.
Five bodies were recovered from the site by rescue workers. China’s coal mines are among the most dangerous in the world and thousands of miners are killed every year.
