Global chillies output records 5% CAGR

NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): The global maket for chillies is estimated at 400,000 metric tonnes and production in major countries are growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2 percent, according to K Devender Reddy of ITC Guntur.In a report presented at the recent World Spice Congress, he pointed out that productivity of Indian chilly has shown positive signs in recent years.

In chillies the major producing countries are India, China, Peru, Bangladesh, Hungary and few others. Production of major countries are growing at CAGR 5.2 percent. World trade in chillies is put at 400,000 metric tonnes. Indian share in global production range from 50 to 60 percent, China and Peru are growing fast and Hungary shows a de-growth. Peru and China are dominating world paprika trade. However India is the only one source for hot chillies.

The Indian productivity in Chillies has been showing positive signs showing rise from 1544 kg per hectare in 2005 to 1550 kg per hectare in 2009.During 2007 and 2008, the productivity recorded was 1685 and 1611 kg per hectare respectively. The steady increase in productivity was on account of hybrids.

Production of chillies during 2005 was estimated to be 1185,000 tonnes. In 2006 it was 1014 tonnes and in 2007 it rose to 1242 tonnes. In 2008, the production came to the level of 1297 tonnes and in 2009 to 1167 tonnes. The 2010 crop is expected to be normal.

The area under cultivation was 737,000 hecatres in 2005, which came down to 654,000 tonnes in 2006, but rose to 737,000 tonnes in 2007. In 2008 the cultivation recorded was 805,000 tonnes and 750,000 tonnes in 2009.

Parneet Swani of Swani Spice Mills, Mumbai in a report on seed spices said that the global production of coriander was put at 321,000 tonnnes of which Indian share is fixed at 80 percent followed by Morocco 4.7 percent, Bulgaria and Canada at 3.75 percent level leach , Romania 3.12 percent, China 2.2 percent, and Syria 2.5 percent. The total global exports of coriander is estimated to be 93,749 tonnes of which Indian share is 32.21 percent followed by Bulgaria 10.67 percent, Romania 10.47 percent, Canada 9.96 percent, Morocco 9.21 percent, Syria 5.80 percent, China 5.68 percent and others 16 percent.

The average global production of cumin is put at 211,000 tonnes and the average global demand at 75,000 tonnes. India's consumption is estimated to be 110,000 tonnes. The total production of Cumin is estimated to be 211,000 tonnes globally. Indian share is 68.72 percent followed by Syria 8.53 percent, China 5.7 percent, Pakistan 4.75 percent, Iran and Turkey 3.8 percent each and others 4.75 percent. The total export of cumin globally is estimated to be 75,600 tonnes of which the Indian share is 60 percent followed by Syria 13.23 percent, Iran 6.9 percent, Turkey 6.5 percent and others 13.23 percent.

UAE with 17 percent of the imports, followed by Bangladesh 13 percent, USA Nine percent, Singapore and Saudi Arabia and Brazil and the UK each with four percent are the major buying countries. The average global production of fennel is put at 90,000 tonnes and the avearge global demand at 20,000 tonnes. The Indian consumption is estimated to be 66,000 tonnes. Of the global exports of 20,000 tonnes of fennel India contributes to 43.37 percent followed by Egypt 17.5 percent, China eight percent, Bulgaria five percent, Turkey 3.25 percent, and others 22.8 percent. The major buying countries are USA with 19 percent followed by Malaysia 11 percent, Germany eight percent, the UK five percent, Saudi Arabia and UAE each five percent and others 48.90 percent.

Production of other seed spices in India as per 2008 figures is Fenugreek 67,645 tonnes, Dill 18,465 tonnes, Ajwain [Bishops weed] 11,200 tonnes and Celery 5500 tonnes. India exports 20750 tonnes of fenugreek, 1250 tonnes of dill, 835 tonnes of ajwain and 3650 tonnes of celery as per 2008 estimates.
