Global coffee production may dip on bad weather

NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): Global coffee output is expected to decline significantly in 2009-10 because of bad weather in the major coffee growing countries Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia.

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), coffee production may shrink to 128.1 million bags as against the previous year owing to bad weather. Production in Brazil, the world’s biggest coffee producer, is estimated to be 39 million tonnes in the 2009-10 season, against 45.99 million bags in a year ago.

Similarly, Vietnam and Colombia, the other major producers, are expected to produce less coffee this year due to the same reason. Previous year, these two countries had produced 16 million bags and 8.7 million bags each, ICO said.

ICO said, however, production is expected to rise in Asia, Africa and Central America. The report also highlighted that a likely dip in production and lower opening stock could weigh on global coffee prices.
