Goa’s cashew hit by global warming, fungal attack

GOA: Global warming will have major impact on production of cashew this year in Goa. Of the total produce this year only 30% to 35% will survive as the nut apples have dried and fallen a the budding stage before getting ripe,
Times of India report quoting scientists at Dapoli Agriculture University said.
Scientists said the crop couldn't get enough cold - a temperature below 17 degrees Celsius - to be able to ripen. On the contrary, it faced an unnatural heat in the month of January and February followed by dew and unseasonal showers exposing it to extremely bad climate fluctuations leading to fungal attack, the report said.
Cashew cultivators said that sudden weather changes led to fungal attacks from thrips and red mite that would lower crop production this year.
