Has mango crop lost its sheen?
Commodity OnlineMUMBAI: India’s famous mangoes seem to have lost touch with weather. After a recent spate of bad weather in Malda, it is the turn of pests to attack the mango cultivation across the country.
Any attacks during flowering season mean lower output and farmers who depend on mango cultivation suffers. But prophylactic plant protection measures can be implemented to avoid such an eventuality.
Along with south Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Mahrashtra Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are the other two top growers of mango. Each state has its own varieties with high quality mangoes exported. Indian mangoes are in high demand in major overseas markets.
But mango seems to have lost touch to the new generation crops like leethchi, if trends in UP are of any value.
Climate changes are said to be the main reason behind this change.
