India cotton arrivals dip 1.4% YoY, hints firm prices
MUMBAI (Commodity Online): As the season of cotton harvesting enters into its last phase, cotton prices seem to be sailing on high. Price rise is indicative as this year, according to Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), arrivals during October-March period was recorded lower by 1.4% over the corresponding period the previous year.
Cotton arrivals in India was seen lower during October-March 2009-10 period compare to the corresponding period the previous year. According to the figures provided by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), arrivals dipped by 1.4% on year-on-year basis.
The overall arrivals were recorded at 24.14 million bales (1 bale =170 kg) during October 1-March 13, 2009-10 period.
Gujarat emerged as the largest cotton producing state as arrivals in the state during the same period were 7.9 million bales, up 21.5% on year. In Maharashtra, arrivals were lower by 17.7% at 5.1 million bales. In north Indian states of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana, arrivals were lower by 0.3% at 3.62 million bales. Punjab witnessed arrivals of 1.3 million bales, down 18.9% from a year ago. Arrivals in Haryana were 1.32 million bales, up 1.5% from a year ago.
Rajasthan arrivals were higher by 38.5% at 990,000 bales during the same period. Arrivals for southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu stood at 5.17 million bales, down 3.5% from a year earlier. Andhra Pradesh arrivals were down 5.5% at 4.3 million bales during the same period.
Cotton prices for the MCX April contract stood higher at Rs.633.8 for 20 kg.
