India food inflation rises to 16.44 percent
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online) : India’s wholesale based food inflation rose marginally to 16.44 percent for the week ended May 1.
Analysts said food inflation rate climbed despite Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Wednesday that a good monsoon, coupled with steps initiated by the government on the supply side of foodgrains, will bring down consumer prices in the next few months.
Food prices in India have stayed above 15 percent since November after last year’s monsoon rains were the weakest in almost four decades, hurting sugar, rice and wheat output.
India’s benchmark inflation rate rose to 9.9 percent in March, a 17-month high. The commerce ministry will unveil April’s inflation data tomorrow.
