NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): India, on the back of bumper rice harvest, may consider the request for rice exports to Indonesia according to K.V Thomas, food Minister.
The rice from the major exporter, Thailand, turned out to be costly due to the crop damages, Indonesia to meet the domestic rice demand at cheaper prices, has sought India government support for exports.
The delegates from Indonesia had met the Food Minister on Wednesday for exports of rice to meet its domestic shortage.
If the exports tie-up occurs, Indonesia may reconsider the export tariff of edible oil, as India is the largest importer of edible oil from Indonesia.
Earlier, India had allowed 300,000 tons of rice to Bangladesh at a price of Rs 20,000 per ton on a diplomatic basis.
India rice harvest is expected to touch a whopping 102 million tons for 2011-12.
