India rainfall deficit shrinks to 5% for season
MUMBAI (Commodity Online): The concerns about deficient rains seen fading away as the recent spell of rains renewed hopes of better monsoon this year. According to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, India’s monsoon has remained 38% above normal in the week ending July 28, 2010.
Monsoon showers during the week remained fairly good over the previous week to Jul 21, when monsoon was reported to be 17% below normal. The overall rainfall still remains deficient with about 5% shortage for the current year.
The country received 94.3 millimetres of rainfall during Jul 22-28 against the 50-year average of 68.2 mm, the IMD data showed.
However, still 21% of the area in the country remains under deficit of rains during the week. Almost 80% of the region in the country has received normal or excess rainfall during the given period.
Rains were excess in 55% of the country and normal in 24%. Monsoon was deficient and scanty in remaining 21% of the country during the week, IMD said.
The western, central and north-western regions including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan witnessed very heavy rainfall over last week. In the northwest India including Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, the rains were 44% above normal.
The northeast region saw tepid monsoon activity during the week as the rains remained 35% below normal.
The government estimations suggest towards a normal monsoon this year, thereby boosting agriculture activity.
