SEOUL (Commodity Online): South Korea becomes the ninth country to sign civil nuke deal with India after country getting the waiver from the Nuclear Suppliers' Group (NSG) in 2008
The nuclear agreement was signed by Dr Srikumar Banerjee, Secretary Department of Atomic Energy and Kim Sung Hwan, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, after a meeting between President Pratibha Patil with her South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-Bak.
India had signed nuke deals earlier with US, France, Russia, Canada, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Argentina and Namibia.
“Seeing that Indo-Japanese nuke agreement has hit a roadblock, South Korea wants to use this opportunity to sell its nuclear hardware to India,” said an official.
In South Korea , 20 nuclear plants is under operation that generate some 35% of its electricity needs, and is keen to export its technology to fast developing countries like India.
"The two countries have just concluded and signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy," said Sanjay Singh, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs
The deal would help India to use new technology in the field of nuclear power generation.
Both India and South Korea where under talk since last October.
