India spices exports fall 4% in value in July

KOCHI (Commodity Online): India’s spices exports have risen 4% in volume and decreased four percent in value in July at 40,625 MT valued at Rs 460.73 cr as against 38,975 MT valued at Rs 480.07 crore recorded in July 2008.

The major items, which have shown positive trend during the month, are Chilli, Cardamom (Small), Turmeric, Nutmeg& Mace and Garlic, according to Spices Board.

The cumulative export during April- July 2009, a total quantity of 164,215 tonnes of spices valued Rs.1690.81 crores (347.07 million US $) has been exported as against 189,870 tonnes valued Rs.1880.88 crores (448.30 million US $) in April- July 2008.Compared to last year, the export has shown a decline of 10% in rupee value and 14% in export volume. As compared to the earlier months, the export has recorded a positive trend. The major spices exported during the period are Mint Products, Chilli, Spice oils & oleoresins, Cumin, Turmeric and Pepper. The Spice oils & oleoresins including mint products contributed 34% of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 20% followed by Cumin 10% and Turmeric 8%.

During April- July 2009, the export of Cardamom Small, Cardamom Large, Turmeric, Coriander, Celery, Fennel, Garlic, Nutmeg & Mace, Curry Powder, Other seeds and Misc. spices are higher in terms of both quantity and value as compared to the same period of last year. However, export of spices viz. Pepper, Chilli, Cumin, Vanilla, Mint Products and Spice Oils & Oleoresins have shown decline both in terms of quantity and value as compared to the same period of last year.

During April- July 2009, we have exported 6750 tonnes of pepper valued Rs.102.34 crores as against 9430 tonnes valued Rs.160.35 crores of last year. During the period, export of pepper to US, EU and other major destinations, has declined compared to April- July 2008. The export of chilli during April-July 2009 has been 55,000 tonnes valued Rs.342.03 crores as against 81,000 tonnes valued Rs.415.52 crores of last year. The decline in export of Chilli is mainly due to the absence of Pakistan from the market. Last year they have imported 22,000 MT of Chilli during the same perod of 2008-09.

The export of Turmeric during April-July 2009 has been 21,000 MT valued Rs.132.43 crores as against 21,000 MT valued Rs91.58 crores in April-July 2008, registering an increase of 45% in value. The export of Coriander seed has also increased from 12,745 MT valued Rs.83.06 crores in April-July 2008 to 16,750 MT valued Rs.84.80 crores in April-July 2009. Export of Nutmeg and Mace has shown substantial increase during April-July 2009 and the export has been 1035 MT valued Rs.26.08 crores as against 245 MT valued Rs.8.05 crores of last year. Compared to last year export of Garlic has also increased and the export during the period has been 1450 MT valued Rs.2.91 crores as against 440 Mt valued Rs.1.26 crores

Among the processed spices, export of curry powder has increased by 13% in volume and 20% in value terms. However, export of spices extracts and mint products during the period have declined as compared to the same period of last year This is mainly due to the low inventories in the major markets like US, EU etc.

Against the export target of 4,35,000 tonnes valued Rs.4, 500.00 croes (US$ 1000.00 million) for the year, the achievement of 164,215 tonnes valued Rs.1690.81 crores (US$ 347.07 million) during April-July 2009 is 38% in quantity and rupee value and 35% in dollar terms of value.
