NEWDELHI (Commodity Online): India government is planning to boost power generation by setting up new bio- mass based power plants.
The government is preparing a Nation bio-mass energy mission which will be launched in the 12th five year plan (2012-2017).
At present, India has a total installed capacity 3,000 MW of Bio-mass power generation.
"Our surplus biomass is estimated to be 150 million tons; this could potentially be used to generate 16 giga watt of power. “Said Farooq Abdullah, Minister of New and Renewable Energy was quoted by The economic times as saying.
The bio-mass mission will be completed in two phases- 1st phase in 12th five year plan and 2nd in 13th five year plan. The government has allocated 3,400 crore for the various proposals under the biomass mission.
Almost 70% of the country's population lives in villages with marginal access to electricity. If the mission is successfully completed, then each MW produced would be able light 6,000 rural households.
Biomass is derived from agriculture, animal and human waste which can be used to produce fuel, power and heat.
