India to review tax free sugar import deadline
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online) : India’s trade and Commerce minister, Anand Sharma said a high-ranking ministerial panel will soon consider whether to extend the March 31 deadline for tax-free import of white sugar into India.
Speaking to newsmen here he said, "The group of ministers on food security will take a decision on that”.
India needs 23 million to 24 million tons of sugar annually and meets any shortfall through imports. In the current marketing year ending Sept. 30, output is estimated at just 16.8 million tons.
