NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): Indian railway's revenue registered an increase of 8.90% from the commodity wise freight tariff during April- October 2011.
The railway generated Rs. 37392.88 crore of revenue as compared to Rs. 34337.11 crore during the corresponding period last year.
During the period, the railway carried 536.92 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic as compared to 516.89 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 343025 million during April-October 2010 to 357750 million during April-October 2011, showing an increase of 4.29 per cent.
Out of the total earnings of Rs. 5590.62 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of October 2011, Rs. 2294.87 crore came from transportation of 36.12 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 550.60 crore from 7.99 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user.
The eranings was also raised from transporting cement, food grain, petroleum products, Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants.
