Indian Railways freight earnings up 8.76%
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): Indian Railways has registered an 8.76% rise in the commodity-based freight traffic earnings during April-February 2009-10 over the corresponding period last year.
The Indian Railways generated Rs.52036.85 crore of revenue earnings during the period April 2009-February 2010 as compared to Rs.47846.53 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 8.76 per cent.
While, in the month of February 2010, Railways registered a total earnings of Rs.4798.13 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic. Out of this, Rs.1904.60 crore came from transportation of 33.13 million tonnes of coal, which was followed by Rs.651.34 crore from 10.13 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user, Rs.463.31 crore from 7.67 million tonnes of cement, Rs.369.95 crore from 3.69 million tonnes of foodgrains,Rs. 262.82 crore from 3.09 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL),Rs. 258.05 crore from 2.35 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points.
Railways had carried 803.50 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic during April 2009-Febraury 2010 as compared to 751.30 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 6.95 per cent. The net tonne kilo metres (NTKM) went up from 485302 million during April 2008-February 2009 to 529076 million during April 2009- February 2010, showing an increase of 9.02 per cent.
