India’s agri output likely to fall by 15 to 20%
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): India’s agri production in this Kharif season is expected to fall by 15 to 20% due to the drought in major farm lands of the country driven by meager monsoon, said the Finance Minister Pranab Mukharjee on Thursday.
Speaking at a FICCI conference here, he said that for the time being it is impossible to calculate the exact quantum of Kharif drop; however the deficiency in sowing all over the country shows the signs of a shortfall to the extent of 15-20%.
So far, 252 districts in ten States have been declared affected by drought, he said.
“Drought is there, rainfall deficiency is to the extent of 26 per cent”. Till August 21, 246 districts were declared as drought affected, out of the 600-plus districts in the country.
Mukherjee said: “We have certain areas of concern like drought, inflationary pressure, Government borrowing and its consequences on long term funding of corporate sector”.
