India’s edible oil imports surge by 101%
Commodity Online NEW DELHI: India’s edible oil import has witnessed a whopping surge in April, more than double to 6.59 lakh tonnes as against last year in the same period, said Solvent Extractors' Association (SEA).
According to a recent report by SEA, the total vegetable oil imports including non edible oils used in soap making, increased by 101 percent to 6,99,396 tonnes in April when compared to 3,09,629 tonnes last year same period.
Edible oils import has been rising every month in the current oil year which began in November 2008, SEA said.
The industry body said the country imported 42.92 lakh tonnes of vegetable oils between November 2008 and April 2009 compared to 26.11 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period.
The quantity of edible oil import is higher at 40.93 lakh tonnes in the first half of the 2008-09 oil year, while non-edible oil shipment declined to 1.98 lakh tonnes.
