NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): India, the world’s second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, has an output of 213 million tons in the 2010-11 periods which is 3.7% higher than previous, Minister of State for Agriculture Mr Harish Rawat said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
The increase of the output was on the back of increased area under cultivation. The country produced 205.24 million tons of fruits and vegetables in 2009-10.
In 2010-11, the cultivation area rose 4% to 14.84 million hectares from 14.31 million hectare in year ago period.
The vegetable production increased 3% to 137.68 million tons in 2010-11 than previous. Likewise, the fruit production touched 75.82 million tons showing a rise of 6% in 2010-11 from 71.51 million tons in a year ago period.
The major producers of fruits and vegetables in the country are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Orissa, Jammu & Kashmir and Kerala.
