India’s monsoon rains fall by 1% point weekly
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): India’s annual monsoon rains have been falling by 1% point from the previous week, registering a 25% fall during the June 1 August 26 periods, below the 50 years average, according to Indian Meteorological Department data.
The country received 514.3 millimeters of rain during the period, while 682 mm is considered normal, the weather department said on its Web site.
The weak rains have raised concerns about a potential fall in agricultural output and a corresponding increase in farm product prices.
Rains were 5% below average in the week ended Aug. 26, according to the weather department. India’s monsoon rains are crucial for summer-sown crops as about 60% of the farms are rain-fed.
