NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): Due to lower pulses production on lack of adequate rainfall in the major growing areas, India's is expected to import 2.75-2.80 million tonnes of pulses in the fiscal 2011-12, slightly higher than last year, according to Rajiv Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
India's pulses production for 2011-12 is expected to be around 17.4 million tons, lower compared to last years 18.2 million tons.
During April-December 2011, India has already imported 2.4 million tons of pulses (including 1 million tons of yellow peas and black matpe or urad, pigeon pea or tur and gram or chana).
But according to Pravin Dongre, President, India Pulses and Grains Association, India's pulses demand to is expected to be slightly lower due to huge potato crop.
